An analysis of Social History in Spain today must consider the re-sponses by Spanish historians to certain recent debates, in particular those about the Linguistic Turn and Postmodernism. This can be pre-sented in two sections. The first is a brief historical review of the dif-ferent stages in Social History as a discipline in Spain, from its aca-demic formation to the present day. Within this general view two types of analysis are combined: internal history, centered on epistemological and rnethodological alternatives in the discipline; and externa] history, referring to política] context and institutional structure. While taking into account the weight of this inheritance, the second part shall briefly attempt to explain the manner in which the Linguistic Turn and Postmodernism have been treated in Spanish historiography.
